Public Relations Internship

The CGXperience

Internships are important. Every college student should obtain one before graduation to market themselves to employers. However, aside from completing an internship, it is just as important to perform well in the position. During my time at The Communications Group (ComGroup), I learned how to be a successful intern. If you are considering applying for ComGroup’s next internship, here are my experiences and tips.

Shortly after I began interning for ComGroup, I realized there is a gap between the classroom and professional world. Initially, it was overwhelming, but throughout the CGXperience internship, the ComGroup team has cultivated my skills and confidence.

At the beginning of the internship, I mapped out goals and objectives with the team. ComGroup tailors work towards each intern’s interests. Therefore, I focused on news writing and issues management. Focusing on my interests worked not only towards my short-term goals but my long-term professional goals.

One of the most beneficial parts of the CGXperience is the encouragement to think critically. Because of the low staff-to-intern ratio, I’ve received valuable one-on-one time with Groupers. Whether it is on my day-to-day or long-term projects, the team takes time to give constructive feedback and guidance while enabling me to take initiative to find solutions.

Additionally, ComGroup understands I am a college student. They prioritize my education and work with my school schedule to assign projects based on my workload. I even get course-credit for the paid internship!

I encourage any public relations student to apply for the CGXperience. Even if you are a top student in the classroom, you still have a lot to learn.

Here are my tips to be a successful intern at ComGroup:

Be receptive to feedback. ComGroup’s team is composed of industry experts. Acknowledge you don’t know everything, and be coachable. If you take their advice, your skills will grow exponentially throughout the internship.

Be solution-oriented. Some assignments don’t have a clear solution, but if you don’t know the answer, find one. You will learn more by problem-solving.

Prioritize your time. Being a college student, you stay busy. Therefore, it’s vital to efficiently manage your time. Stay focused, and be productive throughout each day.
