A Cattlewoman’s Legacy: Cultivating Camaraderie at the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Associations Convention and Tradeshow

Karen Haralson, a cattlewoman from Atkins and the former secretary-treasurer of the Pope County Cattlemen’s Association, recognized an opportunity during the 1976 Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association Convention to foster camaraderie among cattle producers across the state. The prevailing Hospitality Room was an exclusive event at the time, available only to a select group of attendees. The following year, Karen arranged what would evolve into an enduring piece of the culture and tradition surrounding the ACA’s annual Convention and Tradeshow.

The Hospitality Room comes alive during the night after the official convention proceedings conclude. Farmers, families and folks from agricultural businesses congregate in a suite of the adjoining hotel, forging bonds with one another. The Hospitality Room’s beginnings were modest, but with time, the convention attendees became enthralled by the event, leading to its steady growth since its inception.

“I love the people, and I’m close to everyone who’s been there,” Karen remarked. “It’s always been open to kids. My grandson has been in it since birth. It’s a family tradition.”

Nevertheless, at the 65th Annual Convention and Trade Show, Karen handed the reins to Carson Horn, Public Relations Director at The Communications Group and former Director of Communications at ACA.

“We are so glad that Carson has taken over this wonderful tradition,” Karen expressed. “In a deal like that, you can learn a lot from hearing another cattleman talk.”

Although Karen no longer presides over the affair, Carson, a seasoned veteran of the Hospitality Room, is resolute in upholding Karen’s legacy, nurturing a warm and captivating experience for years to come.

“Within the walls of Karen’s Hospitality Room, I've formed lasting friendships. I couldn't be happier to follow in her footsteps, providing others with the chance to build their own meaningful connections, just like I did,” Carson commented. “We appreciate the ACA for its partnership and the opportunity to be a part of this living tradition and to show our support for cattle producers, the association and the Arkansas beef industry.”

The legacy of Karen's vision lived on through Carson and his team, nurturing a welcoming and engaging atmosphere, and solidifying the Hospitality Room as a highlight of the ACA Convention and Tradeshow, just as Karen had intended.
